Each year, Bethesda Lutheran Homes and Services, Inc., gives out a number of awards and scholarships to deserving Lutheran students who are interested in pursuing an education in the field of developmental disabilities services.

Nadine Thurow

Bethesda is pleased to award Nadine Thurow of Watertown, Wis., with a $1,500 scholarship for entering the field of developmental disabilities. To be eligible for this scholarship, the student must have successfully achieved sophomore or junior status at an accredited college or university and be a full-time student with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The students had to complete 100 hours of work to benefit people with developmental disabilities and submit a 250-500 word essay on the career they have chosen to pursue.

Thurow, who is a senior at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, is pursuing a degree in special education in the areas of cognitive disabilities, learning disabilities and emotional behavioral disabilities.

She is an active member of UW-Eau Claire’s Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC) organization, where she attends meetings and volunteers at local events like Special Olympics along with various dances for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Last year, Thurow did her field experience at Riverside Middle School in Watertown, Wis., for three weeks, where she observed two special education teachers and was able to help around the classroom and with the students themselves.

In addition, she spent many summers volunteering her time and services at Clearview Nursing Home in Juneau, Wis.

“I enjoy working with children and young adults and seeing them succeed,” says Thurow. “The biggest joy to me is the look of accomplishment on the student’s face when they have had a breakthrough in their education. Special education is one way in which I can assist in these accomplishments. As a future teacher, I know I can be creative and effective in my teaching techniques.”

Now in its second century of service, Bethesda Lutheran Homes and Services, Inc. provides services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities throughout the country and throughout the world. It is Bethesda’s mission to support the needs of the individual—both physical and spiritual—and as a result, Bethesda offers many different types of services for the individual and their family, including a variety of residential facilities, supported-living programs, outreach services and secular training workshops.
