Bethesda Lutheran Homes and Services, Inc., a worldwide leader in the developmental disability service industry, recently awarded the 2006 Pool of Bethesda Award to Timothy P. Shriver, P.H. D.

Bethesda honored award recipients from several categories at the 2006 Annual Banquet, held Nov.12, 2006 at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, Wis. Each year, Bethesda presents its Pool of Bethesda Award to recognize individuals who have made national or international contributions of service and leadership in the field of developmental disabilities.

Shriver is the chairman of the Board of Special Olympics. As president of the organization since 1996, he has launched an ambitious growth agenda and set a goal of two million athletes worldwide by the end of 2005. While achieving this goal, he created new initiatives in athlete leadership, research, health, education and family support, helping to transform Special Olympics into a movement that focuses on acceptance, inclusion and respect for individuals with developmental disabilities across the globe. Shriver also serves on the Board of the Education Commission of the States Compact for Learning and Citizenship, the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center at the University of North Carolina and the American Association on Mental Retardation.

“We are extremely honored and proud to award Timothy Shriver with this year’s Pool of Bethesda Award,” says Dr. David Geske, president and CEO of Bethesda Lutheran Homes and Services, Inc. “His work and accomplishments in the developmental disability service industry has truly made a difference in the lives of countless individuals with developmental disabilities around the nation and across the globe.”

Other awards presented at the meeting included, the Christian Service Award for Volunteers, the Bethesda Christian Service Award for Professionals and the Bethesda Voices Public Policy Award.
