Involving Families and Guardians (2000)

Professionals come and go. But most parents will remain and advocate well into their children's adult lives. People with developmental disabilities experience many losses; losing contact with their families or guardians could be their biggest loss of all.
After completing this module, the learner will:
- List barriers that inhibit relationships between parents and children
- Describe the impact of a first contact or meeting between staff and families
- List four ways to enhance the communications channel
- List six guidelines for using the phone
- Identify three advantages of using an answering machine
- Recognize five components of a well-written newsletter
- Develop a list of five new ideas for future activities
- Define the term "family friendly" and list the three factors of this concept
- List three common barriers that are difficult for staff to overcome
