Who Are You Looking At?

Psalm 145:15-16

"The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing."

The last few years have been stressful for our nation and, for many of us, our families. The conflict in the Middle East has separated many people from their loved ones who are serving in the military. There is growing concern as we hear daily news reports of the deaths of soldiers and civilians. We wonder when we will see our loved ones again and if they will be safe as they serve our country. When will peace return to the Middle East? When will life get back to "normal"? In addition, the economy has taken a nosedive resulting in job losses and cutbacks for many organizations. What will the New Year bring? What is in store for us in 2004?

While Psalm 145:15-16 is often used as a prayer on Thanksgiving Day, it is also an appropriate verse to focus on as we face a New Year with all its uncertainties and questions. Many people in our world will look at their horoscope or a psychic to ease their concerns about the coming year. These verses from God's Word, however, acknowledge that we need to be "looking at" God the Creator of the universe to provide for all that we need in our lives.

Psalm 145:15-16 reminds us that we can trust in God to give us what we need at the "proper time." It reminds us that we will be satisfied with whatever God gives us, it will be enough. It reminds us that everything comes from God and His hands. He is our Provider. And finally, God cares for all living things — you, me, the sparrows and yes, even the lowly earthworm.

What a sense of relief and joy to know that we can trust in God for all that we need in our lives. There is no concern or problem that is too great or too small for Him. He has everything under control. What joy to know that the one who provides for us does so out of His unending love for us. A love so great that He gave His only Son to die for us on the cross to save us from our sins.

If you're like me, you need constant reminders to look to God our Father for all that you need in life. To help you remember who to "look at" you might want to write this Bible verse down and stick it up somewhere where you can read it every morning when you get up, or perhaps write it inside your checkbook.

Psalm 145 begins and ends with verses of praise. May each day of our lives begin and end with praise as we learn to trust in God our Father for all that we truly need.

Heavenly Father, You are all goodness and love. You know precisely what we need and when we need it. Please help us to trust in You completely for all that we need and all that weighs heavy on our heart. Please forgive us for the times we worry and doubt Your love for us. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
