Bethesda's scholarships and awards program encourages Lutheran youth to develop God-pleasing attitudes and actions toward people with individual differences, and to consider careers in the field of developmental disabilities services. The Scholarship Program is currently being revised. Check back at the end of July, 2008. Questions? Contact us. Check out last year's scholarship recipients.

$1,500 Scholarship for Lutheran College Students (entering the field of developmental disabilities)

The application process includes a short, relevant essay, 100 hours of paid or volunteer work in the field of developmental disabilities, services and letters of reference.

Eligible candidates

  • are active communicant members of a Lutheran church,
  • have achieved sophomore status or higher at a college or university, not necessarily a Lutheran college,
  • have earned a minimum 3.0 overall GPA,
  • and have an interest in a career in the field of developmental disabilities.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Awards for Lutheran High School Students

These awards benefit both the winning student and his or her school. Students must complete two activities from a suggested list, which, together with the application process, are designed to promote the student's knowledge of careers in the field of developmental disabilities services. Up to three awards are given - $250, $150, $100.

Eligible candidates

  • are active communicant members of a Lutheran church,
  • have achieved junior or senior status at any high school,
  • have earned a minimum 3.0 overall GPA,
  • and have an interest in a career in the field of developmental disabilities.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Awards for Lutheran Elementary Classes

These awards benefit the winning elementary class and school or church library. The class completes six of 16 activities designed to help them understand the challenges faced by people with disabilities and to encourage God-pleasing attitudes toward children and adults with disabilities.

Three awards ($200 each) may be given, one in each of the following categories:

  • Lower grades - Pre-school through 4th grade, including combined classes
  • Upper grades - 5th - 8th grades, including combined classes
  • Combined grades - any combination of upper and lower grade classes (e.g., K/5 or 3/8)

Eligible candidates

  • are part of a Lutheran day school or Sunday school,
  • complete activities that focus on an awareness and understanding of developmental disabilities,
  • develop proper Christian attitudes toward people who have developmental disabilities,
  • and prepare a "report" representative of the total class effort.
